Gifts for Coworkers: 75 Professions, and When Not to Buy a Shirt

Sep 01, 2026 · Gift Guides

Most guides to office gifts pretend a slogan shirt is a safe choice. It is not. A shirt is a piece of clothing you are asking a colleague to put on their body, in front of other colleagues, and get it wrong and they will smile, say thank you, and never wear it.

That said, there is one version that works reliably: a shirt about the job they actually do, bought by someone who clearly knows which job that is. This guide covers 75 professions, from $16.99, and is honest about when to buy something else instead.

Do not buy a shirt if any of these are true

  • You do not know their size. Asking is fine between friends and awkward between colleagues. If you cannot ask, buy something that has no size.
  • It is a Secret Santa and you drew a name you barely recognise. A job-specific joke needs you to know the job. A generic funny shirt reads as filler, because it is.
  • The joke is about how hard they work. It lands as a compliment from a friend and as something else entirely from a manager. Consider who you are in that room.
  • They are more senior than you and you are not close. Clothing is more personal than most people account for.

If none of those apply, the rest of this page is useful.

Get the job title exactly right

This is the whole difference between a good and a bad version of this gift. Trades and professions split far finer than outsiders realise, and the person receiving it lives on the correct side of that line:

  • A welder joins metal. A fabricator builds the thing. Both exist here and they are not interchangeable.
  • A carpenter is a trade, a woodworker is usually a hobbyist, and a logger does neither.
  • An ICU nurse does not consider their job the same job as a ward nurse, and will tell you so.
  • Intensive care and critical care mean the same work, but hospitals differ on which term they use. Match whichever they say.

Buying the near-miss title is worse than buying nothing, because it proves you were not listening.

Timing, if this is for a December party

Everything here is printed after you order, so allow two to three weeks — and more than that in December, when print queues and couriers slow at the same time. Order by the end of November. There is no expedited option that fixes a full print queue.

Buying for the same party but not for a colleague? The Christmas guide covers designs grouped by recipient.

Sizing and ordering

  • Unisex tees run true to size. When in doubt for a colleague, go one size up — too big reads as a style choice, too small does not.
  • Darker colours are the safer pick for anything that might be worn to a job site.
  • Checkout happens on the print partner's site — sizes, colours, payment and delivery are handled there.
